Welcome to Holy Name

Thank you for worshipping with us today.

Please visit our website www.holynametoronto.com for more detailed information on the parish and our faith.

In the person of the householder, today’s Gospel presents an image of God that might shock.  Initially the householder treats the servants fairly, giving each a number of talents in relation to their ability.  But at the end, it seems that one servant is treated unfairly, having even the one talent he was given at the beginning taken away.  This person did nothing wrong.  Why, then, the harsh treatment?  This last servant, driven by fear, was unable to act.  And this is the problem.

Fear make the servant blind to the possibilities for the future, blind to his own gifts.  Focused on what could go wrong rather than what the best outcome might be, the servant hides the talent received.  In the end, his fear costs him everything.

With this parable, the Gospel reminds us that each of us has a responsibility to recognize and use the gifts God has given us. No two people are identical or have the same gifts and talents.  No two would do the same task in exactly the same way.  Each of us is unique, created and loved by God in our individuality.  God does not expect us to be like any other person, but simply asks of us to become the best we can be; to recognize and own our gifts; to develop our talents for the good of ourselves, others and all creation.
