When it comes to connecting our lives with the texts assigned to any given Sunday, I am not sure “ordinary” as in the Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time fits. I understand we cannot always be in the high holidays of the liturgical year; Ordinary Time makes holidays holier. But the readings this week are extraordinary in their message.
The Israelites wanted a prophet: everyone else had one! I can almost hear my Grade 6 catechism class’s sometimes whiny tone. God says okay, but they have to listen. Ha! Really? In this day and age when everyone wants to be an expert (or worse still, thinks they are an expert), to listen to one of their own? An act of faith, for certain.
Bring in the Gospel. Here is one of their own, Jesus. God is trying again to get the point across to a stubborn people – LISTEN! When Jesus speaks with authority, bring back my Grade 6’s. Who does he think he is? some ask. We “the faithful” can be a tough crowd.
But some of them did get it, they did listen. A new teaching, perhaps a new evangelization. Is this not the invitation for our times, Paul’s “unhindered devotion to the Lord”? Concerns about peace, the environment, the family, respect for life, human trafficking and unjust distribution of the earth’s goods persist. Who speaks with authority and who listens?
